The Best Way To Wear The Season's Plaid

Tina, here.

I have been a lover of tartan and plaid anything for as long as I can remember. Ok, since the 80’s. Blackwatch plaid is an all-time favorite of mine. I have the coat, the shirt, the blanket, and I really want shoes in blackwatch plaid. Plaid is IN right now. It falls in that category like so many classics do, always in but happens to be on trend this season.

I'm an equal opportunist when it comes to plaid. I like Buffalo plaid, too.

But wait.

The Best Way To Wear The Season's Plaid

1. Wear plaid shirts as actual shirts, not wrapped around your hips, hipster style. Unless you're a bonafide hipster.

This is the adult way to wear plaid this season. Not tied around your waist like you’ll see all the high schoolers and hipsters doing. We’re keeping it classy, dolls.

Not a fan.

Switch it up: instead of wearing a plaid shirt around your hips, wear it as it should be worn, and if you need a warm layer, a sweater around your waist will do just fine.

2. Dress up a western plaid shirt.

And oh how I love a western shirt. A true western with a yoke and snap closures. Shop one in the October Style Notes.

Add heels to dress up your plaid.

And embroidery is just awesome. I meeeaaan, can you stand how much of a cowgirl I am at heart?! I've had this western shirt for, yep you guessed it, years. Like 15. But don't you worry! I included a fab plaid shirt in the October Style Vault that is actually a lot more wearable outside Nashville than this one.

3. Stick with classic, traditional plaids in classic shapes.

I also like to wear my plaid in unexpected ways, like with a pencil skirt or a leather jacket and heels. More uptown than barnyard. Here I've got a pretty loud Buffalo check plaid with dressy jeans and black patent heels. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll wear plaid with cords, too, on a cold fall day. But I love to dress up plaid.

This jacket is a classic blazer with a peplum in the back, which is good to have a defined shape when wearing an overbearing pattern like this one. Keep everything else simple and classic. I just added a buffalo plaid jacket to the October Style Notes!

And my beloved blackwatch coat. I wear this primarily with black and grey (no other colors) and jeans. When wearing plaid, let it say everything for you. The perfect blackwatch plaid piece is waiting for you inside the October Style Vault as one of the 9 must-haves.

3. Indulge your Ralph Lauren/Out of Africa fantasies with menswear plaids. I mean, hey, I do.

Where is my horse?

I'm very proud of my vintage, custom-sewn habit ( go with me here, those of you who have actual habits). I bought it vintage, and it is the most beautifully-made garment. And it fit me perfectly when I tried it on. So clearly I was an equestrienne in a past life. I've provided a beautiful blazer in the October Style Notes for you, dolls. Join if you haven't so you can indulge this fantasy as well.

4. Wear plaid on the bottom half sparingly, and with these warnings.

I'm a freak, I know. I have plaid pants. I trace this back to my Harpeth Hall days of wearing plaid every day for six years straight. Which, by the way, I am a huge fan of school uniforms. I believe my creativity in using what you have comes from these days of having like 5 pieces to choose form every day for SIX years. Anyway, if you wear plaid pants or a skirt, the negative space must be limited, because the wider the pattern, the wider you appear. I coupled mine with a silk poncho to elevate them slightly.

Ok so this is a wide plaid, I'll grant you. But it's a subtle tone-on-tone. See how you can break the rules when you know them?
