How To Wear A Scarf The Right Way

Tina, here.

It's been scarf weather for sure in Nashville the past few days. 8 inches of snow! We even had thundersnow. I'm in winter heaven. Everyone gets a fashion hall pass in the snow. The aim is to be warm and have fun and who cares what you look like.

But now back to reality and you've got to know how to wear a scarf the right way. I'm seeing too many infractions out there. So, here my winter snowbunnies is your instruction manual. (And thank you Jessica for the nudge to write this!)

How To Wear A Scarf The Right Way, and The Wrong Way

1. Do not overstuff your neck and décolletage with mounds and mounds of fabric that looks like it's suffocating you.

Wearing a huge scarf in a knot around your neck will add bulk to your frame and make you look booby and double chin-y. Especially if your top has a collar.

Nor do you want all that fabric hanging down the front like 2 curtains that are pulled, because that will make you look wide, buxom and just weird. Especially if your scarf has a busy pattern and lots of color, like this one.

I like a big, long and wide scarf worn straight down my front side, with each end pulled taut to keep it from taking up too much visual space.

Good dressing is taking that little extra step, here, taming the mounds of fabric at your sides, rather than leaving them wild and blowing in the wind all willy-nilly.

Just grab a handful of the fabric around your neck, and pull it taut all the way down. I'll tuck it under the collar of a blouse if I'm wearing one.

You can also wear a large scarf around your shoulders to show off the pretty pattern and colors. Wearing it on your shoulders keeps all that fabric from attacking your frontside.

2. Tie a thin scarf bandit-style around your neck over a collarless top.

This gorgeous handwoven scarf was given to me by my dear friend Chris, when he was serving our country in the Middle East, keeping us safe here at home. You probably have a collection of scarves that were brought to you from far-flung places by beloved friends and family, too. It's so special to wear them, honoring your loved one, and even better if you love the scarf!

1. Start with a big square, your scarf unfolded all the way.

2. Fold it in half, creating a triangle.

3. With the point of the triangle in front, place the other 2 ends behind your head.

4. Cross the ends behind your head and bring them around to the front.

5. Tie the ends in a little knot, then pull some of the fabric down, away from your neck to open you up a bit.

With a shorter, thinner scarf, you can also wear it longways down from your shoulders. I like this option with turtlenecks.

3. An infinity scarf must be flattened a bit, and pulled down a bit under your chin to give you some breathing room.

If you don't draw some of the fullness out of your infinity scarf, you'll end up with a big triple-layer donut and maybe even a triple-chin. You want it flat and low like this.

1. Open up the infinity scarf all the way.

2. Put it around your neck. It's important to let it stretch all the way down in a big circle so you end up with the right shape.

3. Cross it in front.

4. Now pass that new circle over your head, making sure to leave some breathing room, a little open space, under your neck.

5. To finish, pull both donuts down under your chin so you have 2 even shapes. One is not shorter or longer than the other.

6. And finally, flatten the donuts a bit to tame the fluffiness. And make sure you have some open space under your chin! That's key here. Infinity scarves work best with collarless shirts, too.

4. Keep a fur scarf simple.

I picked up this little fur scarf when I lived in London - it's the perfect little touch of a winter accessory.

The best way to wear a fur scarf without a coat? If it's not long enough to wrap around your neck more than once, just cross the ends in front and be done with it. You may need to add a snap. But I do love a fur scarf tucked inside my coat collar to keep my neck warm, which is after all, the point of a scarf.

5. Two more quick scarf tricks: the Loop Through and the Double Wrap.

The Loop Through is one of the most popular ways to wear a scarf. It works best with long, narrow scarves. Fold your scarf in half and wrap around your neck, with the end with the loop up by your ears and the free ends hanging down your side. Then pull the long ends through the loop. The key again is to give yourself some open space under your chin.

The Double Wrap is probably the easiest way to wear a scarf. And again, works best, with a long, narrow scarf. Start with the middle of the scarf at your neck in front, and drape the ends around back, cross them and bring them back to the front. Let the ends hang loose.

The Double Wrap works with any neckline, collar or hairstyle. If you wear a necklace when wearing a scarf, keep it pretty understated.

Actually, this is the easiest way to wear a scarf. If your scarf hangs down too long, especially for you petite ladies, just pull it back a bit on the back of your neck, to shorten the ends in front.
