Core Wardrobe: The Perfect Sweater

Tina, here.

The perfect sweater is a cardigan. Why? Because the right one is year-round, adds shape to your figure and keeps the cold at bay.

A modern cardigan is always on my core wardrobe list. Cardigans can either go Jackie O. or Old Lady real fast. What’s the difference? A Jackie O. cardi is, and here’s that word you often hear me say, fitted. Let’s review what “fitted” means. It does not mean tight or uncomfortable. It means it’s not too big for you.

Women loooove wearing their clothes too big for them. It’s probably the single biggest mistake we see women committing. This one is on etsy, and would make a great '80's costume.

We just don’t want you to look like a shapeless sack.

And that’s the beauty of a good sweater, a cardigan. It nips you in at the waist when you get one that has the right shape, it stretches your summer pieces into cooler temps, and it evokes the best of the 1950’s. If you can find an old 1950's embroidered cardigan, scoop it up! They are treasures to behold. And wear it if you can! This is an old pattern you can get on etsy.

Core Wardrobe: The Perfect Sweater is a Cardigan

1. A cardigan nips you in at the waist even if it is open, when it is shaped through the waistline and has high armholes.

I bought this crochet cardigan last spring because I could see wearing it year-round, especially in the summer when you want just a bit of added coverage, and in the winter when you need something light with all the heavy woolens weighing you down. If you see one, grab it. Just make sure it is not a shapeless sack! Or a short-waisted shrug. (I loved mine so much, I featured it in the Style Vault, and it sold out. So I featured another version a few months later that also sold out! And so I added it to my 12 Core Wardrobe Staples Every Woman Needs, the bonus issue new members gets when they join the Style Vault this month! Existing Vault members get the bonus too, of course!)

Heavy wool layers can really pile on the weight in the winter, so what better way to shed some of that weight visually than adding some crochet!

2. A cardigan covers bare arms so you can buy that sleeveless dress, and so you can wear it year-round, even in colder temps.

I have this sleeveless sweater dress that I've never liked with blazers because it feels too stiff. A cardigan was just what it needed.

Depending on your weather, or where you are traveling, choose either a lightweight or heavier cardigan. Just make sure it is FITTED and not frumpy!

I added a scarf too, just cause. It does make it a little more wintry.

3. Make your cardigan modern by pairing it with something tough like leather pants.

A little leather and a little animal print never did any cardigan wrong. Keeps everything more 2016. I'm wearing white leather pants if you can't tell. I know. But I just have to have about anything in clothing that's white. So I thought, why not?

I'm wearing a sleeveless turtleneck under that cardi, so I needed a pashmina for a bit more warmth. Stay tuned for a post coming up on how to wear scarves, by the way. It was a special request :)

I really like it when your shirttail or hemline peeps out from under the cardigan. It's a good sign when this happens as it means you're not showing your navel, but neither are you wearing an oversized cardi.

Want your own white leather pants? Ha I didn't think so. But try a suede or even a denim skinny pant with your cardigans. Looking for some good cardis? Vault members can find them in the Style Notes of the January Style Vault, along with the lace cardigan in the Bonus Issue, 12 Core Wardrobe Staples Every Woman Needs. I also added a longer cardi for those of who like to hide your bum.

Don't forget, every membership to the Style Vault comes with a free bonus issue this January!
